Power and heart rate are not competing versions of the same metric. Power describes the external work you are producing right now; heart rate describes one internal response to that work. Indoors, where a smart trainer can hold a target precisely, power is usually the better pacing tool. Heart rate is the better context tool.

The most useful setup is not choosing one forever. It is learning which signal leads in each session, then using disagreement between the two as information about heat, fatigue, hydration, fitness, or a bad sensor connection.

What power and heart rate actually measure

Power is the rate of mechanical work at the crank or trainer. It changes within seconds when you accelerate, climb a virtual hill, or enter an ERG interval. A rising heart rate at steady power can be normal, especially in a warm room or late in a long ride. A sudden, unusual response paired with dizziness, chest pain, faintness, or feeling unwell is not a zone problem. Stop and seek appropriate medical care.
